Focused Representation
I founded Lane Montz Law LLC to serve clients with a personal touch that seems to be disappearing in today’s legal profession. Large law firms or “claims factories” where the paralegals do all the work have their place and are not going away – but they’re not going my way.
I only represent a small number of clients on narrowly focused cases:
Construction Project Claims
Building Claims
Vehicle Lemon Law Claims
Arbitrator Services
I have been a construction law attorney for over 20 years, and a commercial litigator for even longer. I’ve resolved over 1,000 disputes in my career, through negotiation, trial, arbitration, and mediation – including hundreds of construction and consumer cases about workmanship, delay, warranties, and payment.
More importantly, I’ve personally served as an Arbitrator in case sizes ranging from a few thousand dollars to several million dollars. I am on Construction and Consumer Arbitrator panels for the American Arbitration Association and Better Business Bureau and I taught Construction Law and Contracting for Bowling Green State University’s Construction Management Program. As long as I don't have an interest in a case or relationships with any parties that might cause even the appearance of bias, I stand ready to serve as your Arbitrator and help you bring your dispute to a fast and fair conclusion.

Building Damage Insurance Claims Umpire
Did you know that most property damage insurance policies permit the insurance company or the policyholder to have the value of a claim decided by a 3 person panel of Appraisers? This can be a valuable process to get a fast and fair evaluation when the parties can’t agree. Usually, the policyholder and insurance company each pick their own representative, called an Appraiser, and the two Appraisers choose a neutral Umpire. If the Appraisers can’t agree on an Umpire, there are legal processes to have a Court choose.
Being a Building Damage Insurance Claim Umpire is similar to being an Arbitrator, but with a more limited scope of authority. Fairness and a judicial temperament are obviously required but good Umpires should understand the damage claims industry, too, because it has its own language and uses special estimating programs the rest of construction largely doesn’t even know about. Assessing the value of a property damage claim is highly technical and demands both construction and property damage assessment experience – the very experience I gained in 20 years as the Vice President & General Counsel of a large and busy damage restoration contractor.
If you are an Appraiser - or a Court - seeking an experienced and fair Umpire, call me. I don’t favor policyholders or insurance companies – I favor a fair evaluation as demonstrated by the project itself. Let my put my years of legal, construction, and damage restoration experience to work for the Appraisal Team.
